Industry News

Netflix Doubles Down on Perry

Less than four months after announcing a first-look film deal with Perry, Netflix is saying “yes, and” by adding on a first-look series agreement- and they’ve already given their green light. Beauty in Black (written, directed, and produced by Tyler “when does this man sleep” Perry) will feature 16 hour-long episodes revolving around the very different, yet entangled lives of two women.

The “Quest” for New Management

Paul Rosicker and Brian Ferrantino join forces to create Quest Entertainment and Management. They’re starting out with a nicely-developed roster including Brendan Hunt (Ted Lasso) Matt Jones (Breaking Bad) and Ever Carradine (The Handmaid’s Tale).

The Tragedy of a Dsyfunctional Set

The first Rust criminal trial starts next week…and it’s going to be messy. The more information about the on set environment that comes to light, the clearer the disfunction comes into view. No matter the outcome, it’s likely to have far-reaching (and needed) reverberations in the wider film industry.

Becoming an Unexpected Icon

The Hollywood Reporter breaks down an actor’s dream come true- steady work, great pay, recognition- and what it can mean for one’s even bigger dreams.

Better Protections- No Matter the Budget

The Hollywood Commission is set to address harassment and discrimination issues on low budget film sets. The ultimate goal is to provide resources that these productions don’t normally have at their disposal. Provisions include a third-party reporting structure called Respect on Set. IASTSE VP Vanessa Holtegrewe called it “an important step toward protecting workers on these low-budget productions.”

Expert Insights

Oscar-winner Sam Rockwell stopped by GQ to break down the most iconic characters of his career so far.

Some of our favorite quotes from Rockwell-

As Wild Bill Wharton in The Green Mile-
“The devil’s in the details. You know, you really- the details add up to a character. It creates a full blown three-dimensional person.”

As Guy Fleegman in Galaxy Quest-
“Even if it’s a comedy, to me, it’s a drama- you know what I mean? you have to be really scared. So you’re really freaking out. You have like three cups of coffee and have a panic attack on a spaceship, but it’s real. It’s not funny if it’s not real. Farce has to be high stakes and real.”

As Bob Fosse in Fosse/Verdon-
“I learned how to dance and had to lose the weight…it’s such a long shoot, and it’s that repetitive thing, and you have a real beard under a fake beard and…you’re getting up at 5:00 in the morning and then you hit the gym and then you’re on a meal plan. You’re working on the weekends. You’re memorizing lines. Especially with something very long like that, you have to stay grounded and be patient. Otherwise, you can slowly go crazy.”
