Industry News

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner

While the four-time nominated Barbie came up surprisingly empty-handed, Oppenheimer grabbed Best Ensemble, Best Actor (Cillian Murphy) and Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr). Best Actress went to Lily Gladstone for Killers of the Flower Moon. The Bear and Succession both (predictably) dominated the TV comedy and drama categories respectively, though Pedro Pascal did win for his lead actor performance in The Last of Us. I guess Roman Roy didn’t get the last laugh this time.

People to Know

To close out Black History Month, Indiewire put together this list of some of the remarkable Black showrunners that have left their mark on the industry. Yes, of course there’s Shonda, but do you know about Mara Brock Akil? Saladin K. Patterson? There’s always more to learn.

Finally Doing Right by Aang

Avatar showrunner Albert Kim spoke on the need to get the casting right for the third iteration of this beloved series and how they went about it. The project, which involved intense layers of secrecy in its infancy, had Kim writing completely separate scripts for auditions. One of Kim’s top goals throughout the process was the remain authentic to the wide varieties of Asian cultures depicted in the show-

“Authenticity was our keyword for the entire production, from the writers’ room to the crew to the cast.”

Box Office Numbers

  1. Bob Marley: One Love - 13.5 Mil (71.1 gross)

  2. Demon Slayer - 11.5 Mil

  3. Ordinary Angels - 6.2 Mil

  4. Madame Web - 5.9 Mil (35.4 gross)

  5. Migration - 2.9 Mil (120.3 gross)
